So, what is happening to Twitter X? I don't think that I will ever understand the way the algorithm of Twitter X works. I'm not the only one, given the comments from others that I find in my timeline.
Here are some things that I have noticed recently.
1) I keep seeing a lot of posts over and over again, often twenty-four to forty-eight hours old. There is no option on Twitter X to see posts in time or date order. There is also no option to see recent posts in chronological order.
2) These old posts seem to be from the big accounts—users with tens of thousands of followers. By the time I see them, there are typically several thousand comments. It is not worth replying to, as no one will see it.
3) The Twitter X algorithm seems to think that I want to see endless posts about food, but I don't.
4) When I do post, hardly anyone sees it now; the stats are a lot lower than a few months ago, and they were not great then.
What I find myself doing is:
1) Use the “Not interested in this post” option a lot.
2) Use the mute option on certain accounts, especially the food ones.
When I do this, the Twitter X algorithm tells me that I will see fewer posts like this in the future. It lies. I still see them.
Image by Bjorn Brathen—PixabayI read recently that Twitter X wanted to do more to encourage smaller accounts. Seriously? Twitter X seems to have become a black hole for smaller accounts recently.
One good thing, though, is that I don't see many bots any more. But that may be what it's all about: Twitter X is trying to get rid of all the bots.
It still doesn't explain all the food posts.
